Our Story

In 2004, God performed a miracle. Dr. Anthony Sanders was in his third year of medical school at Meharry Medical College preparing to apply for the match, a process where a medical student is matched with a residency program in order to undergo training in a specific area of medicine. During this time, he received a phone call from home with an opportunity. He was asked if he would be willing to go to Zimbabwe to see patients in the bush land. They had a clinic they sponsored but had not been able to find a physician that could ever go with them. He did not have a ready response, as this was completely unexpected. He made the excuse that he was just a student. I was told that what I had already learned would be sufficient. He made the excuse that he did not have the finances. He was told that the cost was covered. He made the excuse that he needed a practicing physician to sign off on what he will be doing to get credit applied to his medical school transcript. He was told one was ready and available. He ran out of excuses.
In Zimbabwe, God gave him a vision of how He planned on using the gifts and opportunities He has supplied. The vision was to have a multispecialty mission team travel across Africa bringing access to healthcare. As a student, Dr. Sanders had no idea how this would come to pass. He wrote the vision as it was given, but had no idea what would come of it. Dr. Sanders saw it as a lofty idea, more than anything. The Lord saw it another way.
Dr. Sanders finished medical school and graduated residency often thinking of this idea and realizing that it was becoming more than that within himself but still having no idea how it would be realized. In 2008, Dr. Sanders went to an interview for a position as an attending physician to begin his career in private practice as an obstetrician and gynecologist. During that interview, he met a woman who was a nurse practitioner for the practice interviewing him. He had put on his CV that he had gone to Zimbabwe on a mission trip, and it was noticed. She had been going to Ghana on several mission trips but had not been able to get a physician to go with her team. Their first interaction was an introduction, and the first question asked of him was if he wanted to go to Ghana. He joined that practice in 2009, and by 2011, he was on a team going to Ghana for the first time. On that trip, God showed him that this was the beginning of how the vision was to come to fruition. The first trip was an introductory to missions as a member of the team. In the middle of the trip, God showed him that he could simply participate this time, but next time he was to watch and learn how to lead a team. In 2012, he did as instructed, and God expanded the vision beyond just the medical aspect originally seen in Zimbabwe. The third time he went, in 2013, he led a team of mixed experiences and professions.
Having now led several teams on mission trips, God has shown him that it is time to put the vision to action. With that, He has allowed the vision to expand from Ghana into Liberia knowing that it is the first step among many. While in Liberia, God laid out the vision again but with more detail. However, he knows that the vision does not just belong to me. With that in mind, Dr. Sanders wants to present an outreach arm to A Servant’s Heart Pan-African Outreach, Inc. This is a living document intended to grow and mature as the organization does so.
